I always appreciate hearing from Tennesseans. On July 13, 2024, a shooter, identified by federal authorities as Thomas Matthew Crooks, attempted to take the life of former President Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. This reprehensible attack represents a sad state of affairs for our country, as political violence has no place in America, especially against those running for the highest office. Following the attack, I joined all Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee in sending a letter to Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) urging the Committee to hold a hearing on the circumstances that led to the attempted assassination. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I will work to ensure that the Secret Service and the FBI provide Congress and the American people all information that was available to them prior to and during this attack, including about their decision making which allowed this event to take place. While Director Cheatle has finally done the right thing and resigned, the American people deserve to know what law enforcement's failures were and why this horrifying incident occurred.
